Blooper from “How To Be A Healthy Runner”

Maybe I should have just titled this post, “How To Be An Unhealthy Runner.” The fact is, all the good running form advice in the world will not necessarily keep you from getting your foot stuck underneath a root and nearly falling on your face.

Fortunately most of our filming for How To Be A Healthy Runner went better than this, and if all goes well will launch the course before the end of the month. I’ll let you know when it’s live.

Meanwhile, watch out for unexpected roots.

    • Well since you want the botanical specifics, I tripped on a creeping woody ground cover vine/bush that clings to the ground with roots all along its stem. My foot slipped underneath one of its tendrils, which was attached to the ground on both sides of my shoe.

  1. Hello, so if you are not supposed to bend in the middle, does that mean you have to try not to bend in the middle?

    • No, it doesn’t. The only problem here was that I couldn’t pick my foot up when I needed to in order to catch myself. The fact is, you have to bend at the hip joints when you run, and trying not to is going to mess up your form just as much as pulling both shoulders back does. Unless you have other movement habits that get in the way, leaning from the ankles and allowing the proper counterrotation of your pelvis and upper body permits your nervous system to take care of regulating the muscle tone on the front and back of your body. You’ll bend in the right places at the right times and not in the wrong places at the wrong times and you won’t have to “try.”
