Aligning your hip over your foot in midstance is critically important for reducing the most common stresses on the body–sore quads, runner’s knee, and foot and ankle problems. However it can be difficult to feel how to do it, given that the essence of good running technique is that everything moves, all the time. You can’t hold this alignment, but instead need to be able to instinctively move into and out of it with each step.
